Blood Flow Through The Heart

Some people may get a little scared when it comes to turning that Med Surg textbook to the Cardiac section 🤯. Let’s just start off with the flow of blood through the heart and how it gets there

The VEINS return the blood to the heart by a system of valves to ensure that blood only flows in one direction

➦The Inferior Vena Cava/Superior Vena
➦Right Atrium
➦Tricuspid Valve
➦Right Ventricle
➦Pulmonary Valve
➦Pulmonary Artery(only Artery in the body to carry deoxygenated blood)
➦Pulmonary Veins(only Veins to carry oxygenated blood)
➦Left Atrium
➦Mitral Valve
➦Left Ventricle
➦Aortic Valve
➦Aorta then to the rest of the body

As the Tricuspid Valve closes, the Right Ventricle contracts and then through the Pulmonary Valve to the Pulmonary Artery. Same goes for the Mitral Valve when it closes and the Left Ventricle contracts to the Aortic Valve into the Aorta to the rest of the body. The valves close to ensure that there is no blood flow back into their respective Atrium
